On a Thursday in May, it became important for Martha and me to go somewhere. Saturday we flew to Iceland. Fortunately, we were a week or two ahead of the season. Inexpensive (and also very unprepossessing!) accommodation was available through AirBnB on the main tourist/shopping street in Reykjavik. We had a grand adventure wandering along the south and west coasts of Iceland, especially the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Very surprising to me is that we needed virtually no cash: everyone buys with credit cards. The only problem in that regard is that the gas stations near the airport did NOT accept my card, so we got screwed by the rental company for a fill-up. Moral: fill up on the outskirts of the city.
